Appupen
Visual Artist

Visual artist, comic creator and musician, George Mathen, popularly known by his penname, Appupen has carved a niche for himself in the Indian comics scene, especially with the mythical dimensions of the Legends of Halahala (2013). It is a silent graphic novel, in that it has no words. The visual grammar also plays with the dwindling attention span of the young today. His often lacerating, dark, and satirical takes on the world inform his visual poetics. The intersections of technology with the human questions, especially within discourses of artificial intelligence function as the frame of his latest The Snake and the Lotus. His Rashtraman comics generate a counter-discourse around contemporary Indian politics and satirizes propaganda and ideological warfare through a superhero figure.
